Best Engagement rings Melbourne

MDTdesign is renowned in Australia for not only our stunning range of Melbourne engagement rings, but by choosing to only handmake all of our diamond engagement rings in-store in our Collins Street jewellery workshop located behind our boutique. A process in which allows us to take full control of handmaking your engagement ring.

MDTdesign was established in 1981 and we have been perfecting the art of handmaking out engagement rings from start to finish without the use of computers or a CAD design program as this is simply a step in the mass production process.

Many Melbourne jewellery stores mass produce their rings to reduce costs but what a lot of people do not realise is that this is compromising the quality of their engagement ring. When we handmake an engagement ring, our jewellers heavily work the metal by hammering, filing and beating the metal all with the objective to compress and strengthen the gold or platinum being used. A handcrafted engagement ring, or mass-produced engagement ring, is simply poured molten gold or platinum into plaster molds to create the shape, then simply set the diamonds and polish the ring, a process in which an apprentice could spend an hour on.

Although we have a large collection of diamond engagement rings in jewellery boutique that can be tried on and viewed at any time, this gives us a good basis to work with and get an idea of your style and what ring you are liking. We want to make this ring uniquely yours by making any alterations to the design so suit exactly what you are wanting. We can change any elements like the colour of 18ct gold being used, using platinum instead of gold, making a diamond ring setting higher or lower, changing the profile of the band from half round to flat, adding a matt finish or even something as simple as hand selecting the diamond in your special piece.

Our qualified jewellers meticulously handwork every one of our made in Melbourne engagement rings to produce you a ring that can be enjoyed for a lifetime and worn with confidence.

Whether it be a stunning unique engagement ring chosen out of our vast collection of jewellery, or something we have personally custom designed and handmade for you, you can be guaranteed to be in love with your MDTdesign made in Melbourne engagement ring.

The 4Cs refer to the four characteristics by which diamond quality is judged. These are diamond colour, clarity, cut and carat weight. However, it’s important to remember that these factors are just a general guideline – every single diamond is unique and can vary greatly within these characteristics.

White Diamonds

An absence of colour in white diamonds denotes high quality – the more colourless the diamond, the more value it carries. The GIA white diamond colour chart ranges from D (the rarest and most colourless) down to Z, which has the most presence of colour and therefore the least value.

Based on MDTdesign standards, we consider D, E, F and G to be the rarest whites in terms of diamond colour, while grades lower in the scale mean yellow or brown hues are much more visible to the naked eye. The same doesn’t apply to grades D to G – unless you put a loose D-coloured and G-coloured diamond next to each other on white grading paper. In this case, you will notice a slight difference in diamond colour from the side view.

Fancy Colour Diamonds

These are available in natural colours including blue, pink, green, yellow, purple, red, champagne and cognac. In between, there are different hues such as greyish and orange-ish. Fancy colour diamonds are judged by a different diamond colour grading scale, whereby a greater colour intensity and vividness make the diamond more valuable and sometimes extremely rare.

Coloured diamonds can also be certified. For example, pink Argyle and yellow Ellendale diamonds come with Argyle or Ellendale certification, and can also be accompanied by a GIA certificate.
The grading chart for fancy coloured diamonds on a GIA certificate is as follows:

Faint

Very Light

Light

Fancy Light

Fancy

Fancy Intense

Fancy Vivid

Fancy Deep

Things to Consider

Keep in mind that this is a spectrum of diamond colour. So for example, one diamond graded as Fancy Intense may show more or less colour than another diamond with the same grade, as one may be top-end and the other a lower-end Fancy Intense. Because of this, prices will generally vary across the range, but the thing to remember is that the most important factor in a coloured diamond is the colour!

In terms of rarity, blue, red, purple and pink diamonds are extremely rare, and the Argyle mine located in Western Australia has unearthed some of the most valuable diamonds the world has seen. You can read more about Australian Argyle pink and Australian Ellendale Yellow varieties here and here.

MDTdesign is Australia’s leading tension set ring design manufacturer.

We have been specializing in 100% handmade jewellery which gives us the advantage to be flexible with our technique and create an optimum tension set ring or piece of jewellery. We have an amazing reputation for high quality tension set rings which we have all been hand making and perfected since 1995. Tension set rings, also known as pressure set rings are becoming more and more popular due to their modern look and the ability to show off the diamond with a floating effect. In a tension set ring, the stone is set under pressure which has been created by hammering metal which hardens it and all the hand worked metal is done by our on-site jewellers. The more work that is done on a metal, the harder it gets which creates the strength for tension set technique. The tension in a worked metal creates a high level of pressure onto the central stone. With this strength in the metal, a stone can be held securely in place under pressure without the need for a metal under the diamond to join the band. By cutting a small groove into the side of the bands, the stone will be set in the band and makes it secure. That is how the floating effect is created and makes the design contemporary and edgy. The interesting fact about this style is that more work on the metal such as hammering, filing and stretching it the stronger it becomes. The stone will be held by the major tension and pressure created throughout the handmade manufacturing process. The computer designed rings using a computer aided design (CAD) program, are mass produced and therefore the metal is not worked on by hand and those rings cannot be tension sets as there is not enough strength and pressure to hold the diamond in place securely. Tension set rings are extremely safe and secure to wear. MDTdesign tension set rings are as secure as any other setting type since they are 100% handmade from start to finish. We believe that jewellery is made to be worn and therefore we make every single piece with the outmost care and attention to details to make sure that piece will be enjoyed for generations. The only time that a tension set ring can be damaged is if it is dropped from a height on to a hard surface there is a chance for the stone to fall out simply because of the hard knock that shocks the ring. Comparing this to traditional claw set band, if dropped from the same height there is a chance that the band will be damaged or if it lands on one of the claws, the diamond will most likely be chipped.

For more information on our tension set rings please feel free to contact us.

Many people look at our Mokume Gane ring designs and wonder what it is exactly. Our Mokume Gane is all 100% handmade on-site and made of either 18ct white gold and yellow gold or 18ct white gold and rose gold. This technique is based on an old Japanese method of layering metal.
The Mokume Gane technique is created by firstly extensively cleaning then layering 23 very fine sheets of different coloured 18ct gold and placed between 2 heavy steal blocks. The steal blocks are clamped and by using a tension wrench the 2 bolts are tightened to achieve the exact amount of pressure from either end. The layers of gold sheets along with the bolted steel blocks are then all placed in the kiln for approximately 14 hours at temperature’s reaching around 1000 degrees Celsius. With this stage of the Mokume Gane the result we are aiming for is for the lower melting temperature metal, which is either the 18ct rose gold or 18ct yellow gold, to just be on the edge of melting point which at this stage, will fuse to the 18ct white gold. This creates one solid wafer like solid piece of metal that you can distinctively see each colour. If the temperature is to low the Mokume Gane process needs to start again or if the temperature is too high both the metals will become one solid coloured blob of metal.
Once this Mokume Gane process is successful we can commence rolling down the metal so it can be used to create a ring. The metal is continually rolled to 3mm thick which at this point the metal is then punched using various forms of tooling in order to create dints and dimples on one side of the Mokume Gane plate. The metal is then turned over and as a result of punching and dinting one side, bumps are now created. These bumps are now filed back in order to show the various different layers of metal. Once again the Mokume metal is rolled out thinner and is now ready to be created into a ring.
This entire process from start to finish takes around 15 hours of labour time and cannot be rushed as we are now not working with a single piece of metal with one set of characteristics but 2 separate metals now joined as one.
Mokume Gane rings are extremely labour intensive and all patterning although will have similarities; will be 100% individual as it is not being mass produced.
All MDTdesign’s Mokume Gane rings can be customised to create exactly what it is you are looking for!
